1 CLUTHA CATLINS Destination Clutha Catlin’s heart is the river that flows through from the inland mountains down to create fertile plains and deltas, then onto a magnificent coastline rich with sea life. Early Maori travelled extensively and settled throughout the area. Maureen Wylie remembers the stories of her 4th Great Grandfather… ”traveling down the Clutha Matau River to the place where the sun rose from the sea.” Captain Cook and self-sufficient pioneers fought the battles of the notorious coastline, now scattered with shipwrecks. You can get up close and personal to this amazing history when visiting our Museums. The Catlins has superb opportunities to experience spectacular wildlife up close, picturesque waterfalls, historic sites and excellent tramps. The Catlins is a land of isolated beaches, bird life and its rugged coastline still has extensive areas of native bush. During the gold rush and sawmilling eras the whole district rattled with the sound of diggers and wagon trains as trade routes were established through the plains and across the Clutha River. Soak up the history in Lawrence, where the first Gold discovery was made by Gabriel Read. You could also enjoy a bike ride or walk on the Clutha Gold Trail. The Lawrence to Roxburgh Dam trail is approximately 75km in total. Lawrence is also believed to be the birthplace of the first bike in New Zealand, in 1894, made by local blacksmith Patrick O’Leary. Our Special Place Spectacular scenery, wildlife and a myriad of landscapes from rocky coastal shores and sandy beaches, wetlands to rolling green hills.
