6 Day One Travel south on the Southern Scenic Route along broad sandy beaches and rolling hill country. You will travel through Taieri Mouth, stopping at Black Swan Café in Waihola then on to Sinclair Wetland before continuing on south to Milton, heading inland on SH8 to Lawrence. Here you can soak up the early gold pioneers history, take a jet boat ride on the Clutha River or do a day cycle ride on the Clutha Gold Cycle Trail. Then visit some lovely cafés and boutique shops in Lawrence. Day Two Traveling to Beaumont on SH8 your will cross over the Beaumont Bridge built with Southern Totara, where the first crossing was in 1887. From Beaumont traveling to Balclutha you can cross the river on the Tuapeka Punt. Hours are 8am - 10am and 4pm -6pm. This is the only working punt in the Southern Hemisphere. If you are outside of these hours that is ok - you can travel down the road to Clydevale and cross the Clydevale Bridge. Once in Balclutha the I-site is a wealth of information. Stop and stay the night. Enjoy a meal from one of the many eateries, do a little shopping. Day Three and Four Pick up any provisions required in Balclutha and arrive at the seaside village of Kaka Point. Head out to Nugget Point Lighthouse and Roaring Bay at sunset to observe the rare native Yellow-Eyed Penguin coming ashore. Take in another must-see today — Surat Bay or Purakaunui Falls. Return to stay in Kaka Point, or carry on to Owaka for further restaurant and accommodation options. Explore The Catlins. Early-risers awake to a glorious sunrise at Kaka Point or start your day at the Catlins Information Centre & Museum in Owaka. Visit ‘must-sees’ include: Surat Bay, view sea lions, Jacks Bay & Blow-hole walking track, Purakaunui Falls and Matai Falls, walk the Catlins River Track, watch surfers at wild Purakaunui Bay, visit Florence Hill lookout for stunning views of Tautuku Bay and Peninsula. Visit Cathedral Caves if tides permit. After a full day exploring, return to Owaka to stop over the night. Day Five Take your time exploring more of the Catlins wonders, Head to Cathedral Caves if tides permit. Stretch your legs on the Lake Wilkie walk before stopping at McLean Falls and enjoy a delicious seafood chowder at The Whistling Frog Café. Further down the Southern Scenic Route is the Niagara Falls. Stop and learn about the 180 million year old Fossil Forest and check to see the resident Hector’s Dolphins at Curio Bay, be blown away by Slope Point, and see more of the Catlins sea lion population at Waipapa Point lighthouse.
