Early Maori
travelled extensively and settled
throughout the area. Maureen
Wylie remembers the stories
of her 4th Great Grandfather…
”traveling down the Clutha Matau
River to the place where the sun
rose from the sea.”
Captain Cook and self-sufficient
pioneers fought the battles of
the notorious coastline, now
scattered with shipwrecks. You
can get up close and personal
to this amazing history when
visiting our Museums. The Catlins
has superb opportunities to
experience spectacular wildlife
up close, picturesque waterfalls,
historic sites and excellent tramps.
The Catlins is a land of isolated
beaches, bird life and its rugged
coastline still has extensive areas
of native bush.
During the gold rush and
sawmilling eras the whole district
rattled with the sound of diggers
and wagon trains as trade routes
were established through the
plains and across the Clutha River.
Soak up the history in Lawrence,
where the first Gold discovery
was made by Gabriel Read. You
could also enjoy a bike ride or
walk on the Clutha Gold Trail. The
Lawrence to Roxburgh Dam trail
is approximately 75km in total.
Lawrence is also believed to be
the birthplace of the first bike in
New Zealand, in 1894, made by
local blacksmith Patrick O’Leary.
Our Special Place
Spectacular scenery, wildlife and
a myriad of landscapes from rocky
coastal shores and sandy beaches,
wetlands to rolling green hills.
An easy 40 minute drive south
from Dunedin International
Airport will see you in the heart
of Destination Clutha Catlins at
Balclutha.
We are not just a drive through -
stop, stay and enjoy!
CONTACT DETAILS
Destination Clutha Catlins
Regional Tourism Organisation
Physical Address: 6 John Street,
Balclutha 9230
Postal address: PO Box 216
Balclutha 9240
NEW ZEALAND
Destination Marketing
Manager
Jo Lowrey
Phone: +64 3 418 4048
Cell: 027 777 7157
Email: jo@cdtrust.org.nz
Facebook: www.facebook.com/
cluthacountrytourism
www.twitter.com/cluthacountry
Destination Clutha Catlins
"},{"text":"2
Accommodation
Destination Clutha
Catlins has a range of
accommodation from
motels, boutique bed
and breakfast properties,
homestays, holiday
parks and backpackers.
Some are star rated
and environmentally
friendly.
Banking
Most banks are open
from 9am to 4.30pm,
Monday to Friday. With their hill-top locations and protected native forest
reserve settings, each of the four self-contained cottages at Mohua Park is private with outstanding views.
Guests experience the Catlins at their own pace in new, comfortable, safe and environmentally sustainable
cottages with fully equipped kitchens and all linen and bedding. Mohua Park is an 8 hectare native forest
reserve with many birds, walks and rest areas. Catlins WIldlife Trackers run three day Ecotours and the Catlins
Traverse walk.
“Standout Experience in The Catlins”
“I can’t imagine a better way to experience the Catlins than an eco tour at Mohua Park set in 8 hectares
covered in native forest. On our first day we arrived in mid-afternoon. There are many tracks within the
grounds and we walked several: ancient trees, moss garden, owl trail, glow worm grotto, ponds, lookout seats
and picnic tables. The Catlins is a remote area and we’ve booked full food included along with a day guiding
in the area. Our cottage is self contained so we could cook if we wanted to, but I’m glad to have Mary and
Fergus take care of us. Our picture windows are facing rolling hills with some forest and the lower area for
sheep grazing. I love when I come out all the sheep turn and stand still as statues just looking in my direction.
All in all, if you want to experience the Catlins and not simply “see” it, then this eco tour is fantastic. We
stayed two nights, but with hindsight another day or two would have given us an opportunity for a day of
exploration in the area and another day to explore and enjoy Mohua Park itself.”
Guest feedback on Trip Advisor March 2014
Mohua Park, 744 Catlins Valley Road, 10 minutes south of Owaka On the Southern Scenic Route.
